Welcome (or welcome back) to Summer Adventures!
We want you to have fun while staying educationally active during the summer months. Each Monday, I will send out an email for you and your family. Enjoy!
Week 3: Board Games and Card Games!
Try to work in game time during your summer weeks. Children learn a tremendous amount from playing games (turn taking, winning, losing, following rules, strategy, thinking, planning, patience, vocabulary building, and more). Have fun and laugh with your child this summer while playing (and don’t forget summer reading).
Week 2: Building vocabulary is critical for reading and reading comprehension. One great way to build vocabulary is to talk frequently with your child. Talk, talk, talk!
Amp up your dinner conversations with “Big Ideas”. Depending on the age of your child, throw out a topic for discussion. It could come from the news, current events, or a topic from something that happened that day. It is interesting to get their perspective and you are building vocabulary through discussion. Make sure to ask your kids to back up and support their opinions.
Use car rides to sing songs, identify what you see out the window and to play rhyming games.
When you are cooking or preparing a meal, ask your child to join you. Cooking involves lots of vocabulary. You are talking about ingredients, fractions, problem solving, planning, adjusting, and more.
I hope you are making it through this heat wave. Don't forget nightly reading!
Week 1: Each June, our family sits down together and makes a list of things we’d like to accomplish. We don’t typically get to everything on the list but we put it on the fridge and it helps keep us motivated. I highly recommend this and depending on the age of your child, each list will look different.
- Visit a new or favorite playground.
- Go on a new or favorite hike.
- Many towns have outdoor music concerts. Pack some food, bring a blanket and enjoy the music.
- Make sure to visit the town library and take advantage of all their free passes. This will help add to your list including zoos, museums and more!
Make sure to encourage daily reading and keep reading to your child over the summer!
