Reading Resources

Norfeldt’s Literacy Center staff includes the Reading Specialist, Mrs. Sally Pardee and

Early Intervention teacher, Mrs. Megan Wares. In the Literacy Center, students are taught the skills and strategies needed to become independent, strategic readers.

Literacy support will include targeted instruction designed to meet the needs of each student. We provide direct support in these five crucial areas of reading instruction:

Phonemic Awareness-the ability to orally compose a sequence of sounds and manipulate these sounds to form words. Phonemic awareness starts as children begin to talk and hear separate words and syllables.

Phonics- the ability to recognize the relation between words and sounds. Phonics instruction begins when children enter a formal literacy program as early as preschool or kindergarten. Phonics is also considered a tool to help children learn to read, write and spell and is a critical element of literacy instruction.

Fluency- the ability to read orally with speed, accuracy and prosody (with expression).

Vocabulary- the ability to use words orally and in written communication by applying word meaning.

Comprehension-the ability to apply meaning to what is read.
