Grants Awarded to Bugbee School this year:

Carson Family Foundation Grant:  Reading From A to Z
Patti Farquhar, Lead Teacher & Shirley Green, Rachel Nelson, Kirsten Pildis, Lindsay Bougor, Valerie Hansen, Suzanne Atwood

This grant funds the purchase and implementation of a 12-month Reading A to Z and Raz-Kids on-line subscription to support and enhance grades 1 and 2 reading instruction and individual reading opportunities. Combining technology with the ability to set up individual accounts based on reading level, the program provides resources for fiction and nonfiction texts and related questions that address the assessment elements covered by the grade level curriculum. The program will be used both by individuals and in small group instruction at Bugbee Elementary School and can be utilized at home by students for further individual use or with a parent / caregiver.

Margaret N. and Adrian Selby Grant: A Cultural Experience with Won-Ldy Paye
Kristen Pildis, Lead Teacher & Patti Farquhar, Lindsay Bougor

This African Artist-in-Residence program is an enriching cultural experience that will immerse three classes of first grade students at Bubgee Elementary School in many aspects of African culture during the 2018-2019 school year.  Won-Ldy Paye is an award winning children's book author, performer and artist who captivates both young and old with his many talents.  He will visit each classroom where students will learn about and participate in activities involving West African (Liberian) art, music and storytelling.  This residency will support our school's teaching of social studies and the English/Language Arts Common Core Standards as well as provide students with a diverse cultural experience.  This experience with an African artist in-residence will provide students with an opportunity to develop greater cultural awareness and an appreciation of other cultures. Students will also be able to explore and examine maps, give and follow cardinal directions, and chart a path from one location to another through work with the African continent map.
